History of Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic Dentistry is believed to be the new generation of dentistry.

Before, there weren’t many ways to achieve a beautiful smile because most dentists are more focused on making your teeth healthy and strong rather than making your teeth' appearance more beautiful.  That is why cosmetic dentistry did not really start until the 1980s with the invention of resin cement.

Prosthetics/Cosmetic dentistry improved dramatically in the 1700s when they began to use porcelain for dentures.  And in the 1800s, cosmetic dentistry start placing metals in replacements for missing teeth, but it wasn’t that successful at the beginning as the body shows a reaction to metals, and some of the body rejected it.  But porcelain teeth have become very popular and dentists started using molds with plaster to make sure the dentures will fit better.

In modern Cosmetic dentistry, the materials dentist used in dentures changed in the 1900’s switching to plastics and acrylics and nowadays we used acrylics for dentures. The 20th century is the true time for cosmetic dentistry.  The focus is more on creating beautiful and natural-looking teeth.  Teeth whitening became more in demand as well as dental veneers, fillings, and dental implants.

In the 20th century, dentists experimented with a new technique of teeth whitening, pairing hydrogen peroxide with a bleaching light to whiten the teeth.  This didn’t work until 2 dentists, Dr. Haywood and Dr. Heymann, came up with the idea of using carbamide peroxide in 1989; this made it easier for the dentist to the bleaching in their clinic as well as the patient can also use it to do it themselves at home.  In the 1960s, laser dentistry was invented but during that time this was primarily being used to treat gum diseases until 1996 the FDA approved that lasers could also be used in teeth whitening.

Dental Veneers are very recent; they were invented in the 1930s by Charles Pincus as a temporary fix for film stars that will eventually fall off after a short time.  And in the 1980s, a new technique allowed dentists to bond Veneers to the teeth.  Currently, the dental veneers are thinner and can last for 10 to 15 years if properly cared for.

In  1937, the first implant screw has been created and it wasn’t until the 1950’s osseointegration was invented, making it easier for the dental implant to make in reality but it wasn’t introduced to the public until the 1980s.  Now dental implant is one of the best options for replacing missing teeth.
