Life Issues that affect our Oral health

We all know that a proper oral hygiene routine and regular visits from a dentist are very important to maintain good oral health.  Some people assume that once they brush their teeth regularly will save them from any serious oral problems. However, there are some life ongoing issues that we are not aware of that can affect the health of your teeth.  Here are some of the unexpected factors that can compromise your oral health.

Excessive contact with the Chemicals:

Frequent exposure to chemicals can harm the enamel of the tooth, and cause tooth discoloration and tooth sensitivity.  These chemicals include chlorine in pools, antibiotics, and chemicals found in teeth whitening strips. Exposure to these substances may be unavoidable, there is no reason to panic every time you visit the pool this summer, it’s just that you just have to moderate these chemicals whenever possible.

Alcohol Consumption:

Some studies found that alcohol consumption can increase the risk of periodontal disease; it may also increase the risk of oral cancer.  Additionally, excessive alcohol consumption and poor oral hygiene are major factors for cavities and gum diseases.

Stress

Studies found that chronic stress out can increase your risk for periodontal disease.  This may be because stress causes body inflammation, which makes the mouth (the rest of your body) more susceptible to disease.

Diabetes

Diabetes can compromise the body’s blood vessels. Because blood vessels are found in the gums, this can increase the risk of gum infection; it can also weaken the gums which can result in tooth loss.

Anxiety

We all know that stress can affect our overall mental and physical health.  And some people are surprised that it can only affect their oral health. People who are stressed normally experience bruxism or teeth grinding that can destroy the enamel of your teeth, and dry mouth that increases the risk of cavities.  People with anxiety problems may disregard oral hygiene which increases infection and gum problems, additionally, people with anxiety disorders may also suffer from canker sores, dry mouth, and Lichen planus.

Asthma

Asthma is a chronic lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways in the lungs.  Some asthma medications can reduce saliva and salivary enzymes in the mouth which may lead to dental caries.  Some of the other problems that can be associated with asthma disease are oral ulcers, bad breath, dry and rough tongue, and a burning feeling in the mouth.
